review: Veljeni Valas "Puita, Sanajalkoja ja Kanervaa" (Valas)

Veljeni Valas share some similarities with their Scandinavian brethren over on the Rune Grammofon label. Along with their use of stark minimalist album artwork, this Finnish trio relish elements of traditional jazz while showing a desire to push in new directions through bouts of slow burn improvisation. Although ?Puita, Sanajalkoja ja Kanervaa? (Trees, Brackens and Heathers) doesn?t contain the same bold genre-defying moves as say Supersilent, it does show that Veljeni Valas are interested in incorporating aspects of rock and textural music into their brand of subtle free jazz exploration.
